이효연의 회화는 세계를 재현하는 것이 아니라, 우리가 세계를 어떻게 지각하는지를 탐구한다. 일상에 뿌리를 둔 장면들은 현실과 비현실이 서로 흐려지는 지점에 존재한다. 익숙한 풍경과 인물들은 미묘하게 어긋나는 시선, 정중한 거리감, 불확실한 공간들을 통해 도발적으로 낯설어진다.
홍익대학교에서 회화를 전공하고 스웨덴 왕립예술학교에서 수학했으며, 유학 시절 마주한 겨울빛과 그림자놀이의 기억은 이후 작업 전반을 관통하는 시각적 문법이 되었다. 그의 화면 속 인물들은 서로를 정면으로 마주하지 않고 옆얼굴이나 뒷모습으로 병치된 채 얇은 거리를 유지하며, 눈이 가려지거나 등을 돌린 모습은 결핍이 아니라 보지 못하거나 보여지지 않을 때 비로소 가능해지는 더 깊은 접촉의 조건으로 제시된다.
작업을 이끄는 또 다른 축은 반복과 미세한 차이다. 옆에 놓인 녹색을 조금씩 달리하거나 틀 안에 틀을 넣고 숫자를 되풀이하는 방식으로, 그는 완전한 동일성을 비껴가며 개인의 심리가 사회적 구조를 내면화하고 드러내는 방식을 탐구한다. 맞는 듯하면서도 끝내 어긋나는 지점을 바로잡지 않고 그대로 두기도 한다.
2005년 스톡홀름에서의 첫 개인전 이후 서울을 중심으로 <거의, 그러나 끝내>(Gallery H, 2026)를 비롯해 스무 차례가 넘는 개인전을 열었고, 2017년 한국문화예술위원회 지원으로 뉴욕·상하이·베를린 레지던시를 거쳤다. 작품은 서울시립미술관, 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 63스카이아트미술관 등에 소장되어 있으며 창비·문학동네 등의 단행본 표지화로도 소개되었다.
hyoyoun Lee’s painting does not seek to replicate the world, but to investigate how we perceive it. Rooted in daily life, its scenes exist at points where reality and unreality blur into one another. Familiar landscapes and figures grow provocatively unfamiliar through subtly shifting gazes, polite distances, and uncertain spaces.
Hyoyoun Lee studied painting at Hongik University and later at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, where the winter light she encountered — and the memory of the shadow games played beneath it — became a visual grammar that continues to run through her work. The figures in her paintings do not face one another directly; placed side by side in profile or from behind, they maintain a thin distance. Blindfolded or turned-away figures are presented not as a lack, but as a condition — one that makes possible a deeper contact precisely when we cannot see, or are not seen.
A second axis running through her practice is repetition paired with subtle difference. By placing a slightly different green beside another green, or nesting one frame within another and repeating certain numbers, she sidesteps complete identity, exploring how individual psychology internalizes — and reveals — social structure. Points that seem to align yet ultimately do not are, at times, left uncorrected, allowed simply to remain as they are.
Since her first solo exhibition in Stockholm in 2005, Lee has been based primarily in Seoul, where she has held more than twenty solo exhibitions, most recently Almost, but Never Quite (Gallery H, 2026). In 2017, with support from the Arts Council Korea, she completed residencies in New York, Shanghai, and Berlin. Her work is held in the collections of the Seoul Museum of Art, the Art Bank of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and the 63 Sky Art Museum, and has appeared as cover art for books published by Changbi Publishers and Munhakdongne, among others.
