이효연(b. 1973)은 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과를 졸업하고, 스웨덴 왕립 미술학교(Royal Institute of Art)에서 프로젝트 학생과 특별 학생 과정을 거치며 회화의 언어를 확장해 온 작가다. 2005년 스톡홀름에서의 첫 개인전 이후 서울을 중심으로 활동을 이어가며, 2026년 현재까지 25회가 넘는 개인전과 60여 회의 그룹전을 통해 자신만의 화면을 축적해 왔다. 작가는 도시의 풍경과 개인의 내밀한 기억, 소리와 이미지가 교차하는 지점을 회화로 번역하며, 「스며들고, 어긋나고」 「마콘도」 「환상통」 등 시적인 제목의 연작들을 통해 정서적 결을 세밀하게 그려왔다. 2017년에는 한국문화예술위원회 해외 레지던시 지원 작가로 선정되어 뉴욕, 상하이, 베를린에서 연구 레지던시를 수행했으며, 유중아트센터와 가나아트 장흥 레지던시 등 국내 레지던시 프로그램에도 참여했다. 작품은 서울시립미술관, 국립현대미술관(미술은행), 63스카이아트 미술관을 비롯해 세종대학교, 호서대학교, 가나아트재단 등에 소장되어 있다. 회화 작업과 더불어 『설계자들』(문학동네) 『빛이 사라지는 시간』(문예중앙) 『우리는 페퍼로니에서 왔어』(창비) 등 다수의 문학 작품 표지 이미지를 통해 문학과 미술이 만나는 지점에서도 꾸준히 활동해왔다. 현재 서울을 기반으로 작업을 이어가고 있다.
Hyoyoun Lee (b. 1973) is a Seoul-based painter who graduated from Hongik University with a BFA in Painting and later studied as a Project Student and Special Student at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, Sweden. Since her first solo exhibition in Stockholm in 2005, she has held more than twenty-five solo shows and participated in over sixty group exhibitions across South Korea, Germany, China, and the United States. Her practice translates the intersections of urban landscape, private memory, and sound into painting, developing poetic bodies of work such as Seep and Slip, Macondo, and Phantom Pain. In 2017 she was selected for an overseas residency grant from the Arts Council Korea, undertaking residencies in New York, Shanghai, and Berlin, in addition to earlier residency programs at Ujeong Art Center and Gana Art Jangheung in Korea. Her work is held in the public collections of the Seoul Museum of Art, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Art Bank), the 63 Sky Art Museum, and institutions including Sejong University, Hoseo University, and the Gana Art Foundation. Alongside her painting practice, Lee has contributed cover artwork for numerous literary titles, including The Plotters (Munhakdongne), In Times of Fading Light (Munye Joongang), and We Came from Pepperoni (Changbi), placing her work at the crossing point of literature and contemporary art. She continues to live and work in Seoul.
